I’d like to introduce you to a new friend of mine… Sara Gammill.  Sara is a both a talented and competent marketing executive that’s been serving the Houston architectural community for over 10 years. Sara also plays a major leadership role for the Houston chapter of the
SMPS (Society of Professional Marketing Services).

Sara recently invited me to speak at their Lunch-N-Learn series on August 5th, 2009, which was held at the AGC office in Houston, Texas.  The event was sold-out, and I had such a great time meeting some of Houston’s finest marketing leaders within this community. Thank you Sara for your invitation, and I look forward to interacting with this wonderful group again.

Yesterday, I was solicited to write an article for the AGC (Association General Contractors of America) newsletter on the subject of branding. Listed below is the article I submitted… and I thought it might help you in your business or organization as well.  Enjoy.

BRANDING ARTICLE

Two men spent 7 years building a contracting company into a successful business. In 1995 these businessmen were offered $400,000 for the sale of their company. The company had no assets, employees, inventory, non-proprietary products or services, no accounts receivable, and no real estate. Even their client list was a low priority since there was very little repeat business. Furthermore the client list was only of any value at all… if and only if the clients perceived that in light of a transfer of ownership, they would continue to receive the same standard of quality.

What was the buyer after? The brand! After 7 years of work, the brand alone was valued at $400k.

Your brand is undoubtedly one of the most valuable assets your business can possess. What is a brand? A brand is the perception of your business in the eyes of your clients, prospects and surrounding community. Unfortunately… it’s impossible to be in total control your brand… but you can most certainly affect it for the good. How you might ask? You affect your brand every time you interact in front of and/or with your audience. Consider a few of the following questions about your brand…

1. Does your business project and consistently deliver professionalism and the highest standards of quality?

2. Does your leadership treat your staff and customer base with an outrageous level of service and authentic concern?

3. Does your marketing collateral and advertising communicate the right and intended message? (i.e. quality, integrity, authenticity, credibility & friendliness)

4. Do you deliver your services in the timely manner you promised throughout the sales process?

5. Are you consistently innovating new and improved solutions? Are you getting better and better every day? (You’re always moving.. are you moving forward or backward?)

A brand is a promise… that you’ll do what you say you will do. Why is your brand important to you? A strong brand can offer your prospective clients and customers decision-making-shortcuts in a fast-paced world. Consumers will regularly choose a well-branded product or service that’s inferior and more expensive, over a non-branded product or service that’s superior and less expensive.

Your brand is more than a symbol… it’s a warranty. Your brand is a promise that your service will live up to its name. Actually… your brand is more important than a warranty because no warranty compensates the customer for lost time, suffering, frustration and inconvenience.

Your brand is important because it is the closest thing to a guarantee your customer will get. Brands are even more important to “service-provider” customers because few services have warranties… largely in part because most services are virtually impossible to warrant. How does one warrant that their legal counsel will unequivocally be sound? Does your CPA guarantee you that they will absolutely find every permissible deduction?

Left without a warranty, the client has only your brand on which to depend, and depending on brands is just what service clients do. A service is a promise, and building your brand, builds your promise.

So 2009 is finally here… and it seems as though it’s been a long time coming.  Over the years… we’ve continued to grow as a company.  Since our inception, our goals have refined, our systems have improved… and our values have matured.  It’s time for the visual components of our identity and brand to catch up and match up with these milestones of our journey.

We’re thrilled to announce the launch of an entirely new identity for LOUD! Creative… starting with our new logo.  Our logo has been being evolving since the day LOUD! Creative got it’s start… just a few years ago. From an anemic vector appearance… to a textured, more trendy feel… to a beveled & glassy web 2.0 icon… to our final design… which we’re releasing today.

LOUD! Creative exists to provide web and print marketing design solutions that ensures our clients will be heard over and above the clutter and mediocrity of their competitors.  We feel as though this new and final logo design communicates our purpose in a more simple and subtle elegance… and that it better reflects the level of maturity this company has experienced.

In addition to an entire new corporate identity suite including business cards, letterhead, envelopes, note cards and brochure marketing collateral… we’re proud to announce the launch of our brand new website. We’ve made it easier than ever to learn more about our company, our services and product offerings.

LOUD! CREATIVE AND THE GREATER HOUSTON PARTNERSHIP WATCH THE ASTROS WIN!

Wow! What a great time our team had while meeting so many great people from Greater Houston Partnership at Minute Maid Park last night. We watched the Houston Astros take on (and beat, 4 to 3) the Texas Rangers. Awesome job Astros!

It was great seeing you Tracey… first time in a long time. You’re such a first-class lady. We also enjoyed meeting Caesar Grantham with The Salvation Army… welcome to Houston Caesar. It was also a pleasure meeting Gio Tomasini from Linear Marketing… I know we’ll be talking soon. Tonya and Kelly from Apple One… it was a blast getting to know each of you… and of course… Andrew Somerville from Oasis Landscape Design… we’ll be in touch soon.

There were so many more we met that are too numerous to mention.

We had such a great time… and we’re thrilled to be a part of the GHP. We’re happy to be serving, adding value… and meeting so many talented business leaders from the Houston Metroplex.

OPENSPIRIT CORP PARTNERS WITH LOUD!

Kathy Ashmore, Director of Marketing, and Lynn Babec, VP of Marketing recruited LOUD! to partner with them on this website and technology project, and they’ve been nothing less than an absolute pleasure to work with. This is’t just a project… but truly a powerful and synergistic new relationship.

To say that this web project is significant in scope would be an understatement. This Flash/HTML hybrid site will sport over 21 major sections, extranet and offsite login functionality, a host of secondary and tertiary navigation options, and a whole new interface… and our XChange Web Management System will be powering it all.

10 COMMITMENTS FOR 2008

2007 was a great year, and 2008 promises to be even better for LOUD! Creative Group. I’ve personally reminisced over the relationships we’ve cultivated, the goals we’ve accomplished, the challenges we’ve overcome, and the lessons we’ve learned.

But at LOUD! Creative… we’re passionate about personal growth and corporate development. I feel compelled to be extraordinarily transparent with you. Instead of just posting another tip on branding, business or marketing… I thought I’d share with you the areas in which we’re committed to improving upon in 2008. We don’t have it all figured out, and we learn so much each and every day. So, here we go.

COMMITMENT 1: TO BE MORE EFFECTIVE AT SERVING OUR CLIENTS, AND MAKING THEM FEEL SPECIAL
Simply put… this is our heartbeat, but we can certainly improve. Relationships are at the core of who we are… but sometimes the chaos of a busy schedule and a host of screaming distractions dilute our effectiveness in this area. I am committed, truly and sincerely committed… to serving our clients better in 2008 than ever before. I want to be more in touch. I want LOUD! to become even more of a right-hand partner for our clients, eager to solve problems and add value wherever and whenever we can.

COMMITMENT 2: TO IMPROVE COMMUNICATION BETWEEN OUR TEAM AND OUR CLIENTS
We’ve actually made some progress towards this goal already, but we’ll continue to make progress in 2008. We’ve implemented a Project Hub that bridges the gap between LOUD! Creative and our clients. This Project Hub allows us to manage all facets of large projects like tasks, milestones, files and messaging… all in one centralized location, making project communication more streamlined, convenient and accessible.

COMMITMENT 3: TO ADD VALUE TO MORE BUSINESSES
While LOUD! has partnered with numerous small and large business clients in 2007, it’s simply not enough. In stride with the costs associated with providing high-quality creative, technology and marketing services, our price-points have also been high, prohibiting many smaller business owners and leaders from partnering with us. Well, no more!

In an effort to break down this barrier, we’ve already lowered the pricing structure for our email marketing services by 25%. We’ve also created a Media Portal product, that allows businesses to post their video, audio and image content onto the web for an affordable low monthly fee. Last but certainly not least… we’ve created 2 significantly lower price point packages for website design & development, that start at $299 and $2,999. We want to add value to as many as we can. This is a great step, and we’ll continue to pursue even more innovative strategies to make our services more and more accessible to the small and mid-size business owners.

COMMITMENT 4: TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF OUR BLOG
Our blog is primarily for the purpose of providing free tips on business, marketing, technology & design. Well, it’s time to take it up a notch. Be on the lookout for better tips that can help you market and grow your business. This post excluded… I want to say more by saying less. I want to abbreviate the word-count of our posts to save you time. You’ll be seeing more posts that feature relevant and inspirational stories about celebrities, athletes, politicians and business leaders. And last, I will be making a concerted effort to be more personable… and to share more intentionally through the filter of my own personal experiences, and those of LOUD! Creative Group.

COMMITMENT 5: TO MORE EFFECTIVELY FOCUS ON SYSTEMS DEVELOPMENT
If you frequent this blog, then you already know that I advocate the development of business systems. Systems are necessary to become more efficient, to cultivate employee loyalty, to provide predictable results for clients, and to unshackle you from the tyranny of business slavery. Systems are imperative to your ultimate business success. Well… we fall as victim as many of you do to the challenges in mastering this absolutely necessary discipline as we scurry onto the urgent, while neglecting the important. I am committed to focusing more prolifically “and” proficiently on the operational, financial, sales, human resources, information technology and marketing systems of LOUD! Creative Group.

COMMITMENT 6: TO BE MORE IN TOUCH WITH OUR CLIENT FAMILY
This one may sound simple, but we frequently fall short in this department. Whether it’s the fear of being a pest, or the trappings of an arduous schedule… we’re often not as effective as we should be in staying in touch with our existing client family. That’s how we see our clients… as an extension of our family. Whether it’s followup call, an email to touch base, or a hand-written note to check in from time to time… we want to be more in touch. We want our clients to know that they’re special and important to us… and that we’re ready and accessible whenever they need us.

CCOMMITMENT 7: TO BE MORE PHILANTHROPIC
While we’ve served our community through organizations like the Greater Houston Partnership and the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce, we want to raise the bar. We believe there’s no greater synergy than that which comes from serving others and adding value. We’ll be burrowing ourselves even deeper in these, and other organizations that focus on business development and the overall well-being of our community. We’ll be serving more, leading more, and contributing more.

COMMITMENT 8: TO SHARPEN OUR OWN BLADES
We only recruit the most talented creatives, technicians and leaders in the marketplace. But we’re still committed to improving in our prospective disciplines. Evolving technology and emerging trends require us to remain aggressive in our pursuit of personal growth. We’re committed to understanding and using the newest, stat-of-the-art software, tools and creative resources available to us. We’re committed to honing our individual creative skills in order to remain sharp, agile and relevant, and in order to provide the highest possible quality of design, applications and creative marketing services for our clients.

COMMITMENT 9: TO GROW OUR TEAM AND AVAILABLE RESOURCES
Each time we add a new person to our team, we grow exponentially. We’re not just adding another set of hands. Every new team member introduces a fresh perspective and creativity, leadership, new talents, unique experiences, business acumen, marketing savvy, and additional skill-sets that symbiotically compliment those of our existing staff, allowing us to offer even more horse-power to better serve our clients, and exceed their expectations. 2008 will be a year of growth, and we’ll certainly be adding some dynamic new talent into our mix. We’ll keep you posted.

COMMITMENT 10: TO ASK MORE QUESTIONS
Last but not least… we want to do a better job of asking more questions in 2008. We really can’t demonstrate a true commitment to growth and development without asking the tough, but necessary question… “How can we be better?” While this process can sometimes be painful, we recognize that our brand is founded upon the perceptions of our clients, prospects and community. We desperately want to get better and better and better at what we do, and we need to implement gauges to effectively accomplish this goal. We’ll be implementing a post-project polls and surveys that will allow our clients to candidly review the quality of our work and services… honestly, and openly. This might be difficult from time to time for us… but we recognize its necessity in our relentless pursuit of being the best we can possibly be.

First, I want to wish each and every client and reader a Happy New Year. I sincerely hope that 2008 proves to be the best and most prosperous year ever for you, your families and your businesses. I am grateful for your friendships.

COMMUNITIES IN SCHOOLS, HOUSTON

I just can’t say enough about this great organization, and the impact they’re making. The mission of Communities In Schools Houston is simply to help kids stay in school and to prepare them for life. There are countless kids around Houston that are still in school today as a direct or indirect result of CIS Houston.

Melissa Simon is one of the competent, passionate and authentic leaders at CIS Houston. Melissa turned to LOUD! Creative when it was time to re-think their online presence and email marketing efforts. They knew they needed a website that better reflected who they were, and they knew they needed to be empowered to keep their website relevant and up to date. Listed below is Melissa’s response to a few of my recent questions.

1. Please introduce Communities In Schools Houston to our audience.
Communities In School Houston, Inc (CIS) is the only comprehensive, campus-based, dropout-prevention program in Houston. Begun on one campus in 1979, CIS addresses the academic, physical, and emotional needs of at-risk students on a year-round basis by placing project managers on the school campus. CIS reaches students who are at the greatest risk of dropping out of school by offering six core services as well as several special and emergency service programs, including Project MOVE (Mobile Operations Vehicle for Everybody) Dental, Behavioral Health Intervention programs, the CIS Summer Youth and Employment Program, the emergency needs program, and holiday gifts.

Our costs are low ($184/student/year) and our outcomes prove that the program works: last school year, 99 percent of case managed students remained in school, 85 graduated, and 86 percent saw improvements in academics, behavior and attendance.

2. What are some examples of your outreach?
CIS currently operates programs in 90 Houston-area schools in five school districts (Aldine, Alief, Fort Bend, Houston, and Spring Branch). We partner with over 250 area community based agencies, city/county offices, and other entities to provide services to more than 35,000 at-risk youth per year.

3. Please describe how your new website and email marketing; created by LOUD! Creative, added value to CIS Houston.
The new website and monthly email newsletter has helped CIS pull together its efforts at awareness (both about drop-out and about CIS services) through logo/brand recognition and consistent messages.
CIS was awarded the 2007 Silver Excalibur Award for Excellence for our Marketing, PR and Awareness Campaign.

4. How would you describe your experience and relationship with LOUD! Creative?
The staff at Loud! Creative helped us to pull out our ideas and make them a reality. They answer our questions and have been eager to help us as we move forward with our marketing/PR ideas.

3. How has your new website; created by LOUD! Creative, added value to TPGG?
“We differentiate ourselves in three main ways, 1). offering an extensive range of in-stock items that can be printed and shipped quickly, 2). offering full-service package design services when a project requires a custom approach, and 3). providing spectacular support services to our promotional agencies and to their respective clients.

Our web-site was designed to be the primary way of supporting the above 1-2-3 approach. The catalog and search functions allow our customers and their customers to search by size, style, functionality and price. Very importantly, the site design also offers a ‘branded’ web program for our key agencies which allows them to have our site skinned with their graphics and displaying their specific contact information — this is an invaluable tool for our customers as they present to their clients.

And right from the web our customers (or their customers) can order free random samples, virtual sample services, rush quotes and 24 Hour program proposal generation. The site essentially allows us to provide excellent 24/7 customer service.”

There are dynamic links to both studio blogs, and the ability for the recipient to forward the email to multiple friends and family. There’s an area to feature a recent project or upcoming event. Additionally there are 3 zones at the bottom dedicated to new products, services or whatever Studio 563 chooses.
